Using the Luther College Archives

The Luther College Archives contains materials of enduring value related to the history of Luther College, the Norwegian Lutheran Synod and its founding congregations. These collections are made up of the records of college offices, the personal papers of faculty, alumni and others involved in the Norwegian Synod and its churches, and non-textual material such as photographs, movies and tape recordings.

We are delighted have have patrons use our materials, but all of these materials are one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable and often fragile. Therefore, special care must be used by a researcher who is using the Archives collections.

Archives Use Policy

Materials will be brought to the researcher to use in the Archives reading room on the third floor of Preus Library. Materials may not leave the room.

An Archives Research Assistant is always available in the Archives Reading Room.

Brief cases, backpacks and portfolios must be stored in the researchers coat rack in the Archives Reading Room.

Only pencils may be used to take notes. Electrical outlets are supplied for portable computers.

Absolutely no marks may be made on Archives material.

A photocopier is available in the Archives Reading Room. All photocopies must be stamped with the appropriate stamp indicating the source of the material. Please ask the Archives Research Assistant for help. It is up to the discretion of the Archives staff to decide what may and may not be safely reproduced.

All the materials are valuable to current as well as future researchers. Materials must be handled with care. You will be provided with cotton gloves when handling certain items.

If your research will result in a publication, please see the Archives Research Assistant for the proper citation giving credit to the Luther College Archives. Before publication please consult the Archivist about any copyright restrictions.
