BRANDT FAMILY PAPERS BIOGRAPHIES
Nils Olsen Brandt (1824-1921) Born the ninth of eleven siblings in Slidre, Valdres, Norway, Nils immigrated to the U.S. in 1851, the same year he was ordained as a minister. In this year he also became the first pastor from Norway to travel west of the Mississippi River. Traveling on foot to Iowa for the first time, Nils met a man and asked him where Decorah was. In return, the man asked Nils if he had passed two houses and a grist mill down the river. When Nils replied that he had, the man told him that was Decorah. In 1856 Nils married Diderikke Sophie Mariane Benedicte Ottesen. A year later he became vice president of the Norwegian synod he had helped to found in 1853, and remained in that position until 1871. Also in 1857, a parsonage was built on the Luther College campus for him. This building is now known as Campus House. Nils served as college pastor from 1865-1882, and taught religion at the college until 1881. Other subjects he taught include geography, German, Latin, vocal music, and Norwegian. Nils was also in charge of the Normal Department, established in 1865. After many years at Luther College, he moved on to become a parochial teacher in Brandt, South Dakota from 1885-1900.
Diderikke Sophie Mariane Benedicte Ottesen Brandt (1827-1885 ) Diderikke Otteson was born March 9, 1827 in Sande parish on the Christiana fjord in Norway. She was well-educated and traveled Europe extensively in her youth. In 1856, she married Nils O. Brandt and joined him in his pioneer ministry in America. The Brandts moved to Decorah in 1865, where Nils became a teacher and pastor at Luther College. Diderikke took it upon herself to become a surrogate mother to the college boys. She organized sewing circles to mend the students’ clothing, raised money for cash-poor students by preparing and selling communion wafers and proved an able hostess for college functions. Her Christmas parties and Sunday teas were times for the students to enjoy themselves, engage in polite conversation, and practice good manners. Her nature has been described as self-sacrificing, giving, and encouraging. In appreciation of her contributions to Luther, the alumni association in 1883 had her portrait painted by Herbjorn Gausta. Diderikke Otteson Brandt fell ill in January of 1885, and to the sadness of her family and the faculty and students of Luther, passed away on January 21 of that year at her son Olaf’s home in Cleveland. She is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Realf Ottesen Brandt (1859-1927) A member of the Luther College class of 1877, Realf always had a great interest in music. He played guitar in the Luther College Orchestra in 1878, and helped organize the first band at Luther in the same year. He was a minister by trade, ordained on September 2, 1883. Realf served in the ministry at Brandt, South Dakota, a township and village named for him, from 1883-1900. In addition, he served as minister in McFarland, Wisconsin for 27 years, from 1900-1927. Along with Halvor Hustvedt, Realf was one of the first editors of “Lutheran Herald,” the first general church organ published in English by a Norwegian-American synodical body in 1906. Realf was a member of the state board of regents in South Dakota from 1890-1892, and proved himself a leader of the movement to outlaw liquor in the state. Realf died on March 23, 1927 after suffering a stroke. Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt (Lettie) (1859-?) Wife of Realf Ottesen Brandt, Lettie assisted her husband’s work as pastor and also taught in the public schools. The daughter of John T. Galby and Margaret Aaker of Ridgeway, Iowa, Lettie was educated at the Breckenridge Institute in Decorah. She served as officer in several church organizations, including two terms as Secretary of the Eastern District Women’s Missionary Federation. In McFarland, Wisconsin, Lettie served as President of the local Red Cross branch during World War I until the branch discontinued in 1926. Olaf Elias Brandt (1862-?) After graduating as a member of the Luther College class of 1879, Olaf went on to become an ordained minister on September 2, 1883. He later served as the Vice President of Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and also taught at Luther Seminary from 1897-1917. Olaf also served as pastor in Cleveland, Chicago and Minneapolis. When Koren Library was dedicated in 1921, Olaf gave the dedicatory address at the ceremony. In 1924, he was made commander of the Order of St. Olaf by King Haakon of Norway. Emma Louise Galby Brandt (1869-?) Wife of Olaf Elias Brandt and sister to Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt, Emma was born in Ridgeway, Iowa and taught in the Ridgeway pubic schools. In 1892, she graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Emma served as the Dean of Women and head of the music department at the Lutheran Normal School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from 1896-1898. Edel Margrethe Brandt Reque (Maggie) (1857-1925) Born at Rock River Parsonage in Jefferson County, Wisconsin on October 2, 1857, Maggie was educated at the school for girls organized by the teachers at Luther College, called Comitia Dumriana. She lived in Decorah from 1865 to 1916, with the exception of four years when her husband L.S. Reque, whom she married in 1882 in Decorah, was stationed in Rotterdam, Holland as U.S. consul. After marriage to the Luther professor, Maggie and her family lived in the parsonage that was her childhood home, now known as Campus House. She was a devoted mother, active in church work, and was very interested in the students at Luther. After the death of her husband, Maggie moved with her daughters to Minneapolis, and took care of her aging father Nils. She remained there until she succumbed to pneumonia and died in 1925. John A. Brandt (1864-?) Graduating from the Luther College class of 1883, John went on to become a banker and merchant in Haiti, South Dakota. He served as the County Treasurer of Deuell County, South Dakota, and married Caroline Kjenstad in Brandt, South Dakota. Together they adopted two children, Albert and Evelyn. Both John and Caroline lived until at least Christmas of 1938.
Kathrine Elise Brandt Bothne (Trine) (1867-?) Born in Decorah, Trine was educated through private instruction at Breckenridge School in Decorah and extension courses from the University of Minnesota. She taught music and parochial and evening school. At the University of Minnesota, she coached Norwegian plays. For 23 years she served as the editor of the women’s department of the Decorah Posten, and translated numerous books. In 1926, Trine was presented with the “Medal of Merit” by King Haakon of Norway. Sigurd Styrk Reque (1883-?) Sigurd was born on February 26, 1883, and graduated from Luther College in 1903. After attending Luther Seminary from 1905 to 1906, he returned to teach at Luther College from 1906 to 1908. He married Carolyn Bye in 1913, and in 1919 returned to teach again at Luther, this time staying until 1952. During this time, Sigurd was made athletic director and was put in charge of baseball in 1924. He also served as the director of the Norwegian-American Historical Museum from 1940 to 1949. Diderikke Margrethe Brandt Preus (Dikka) (1885-?) Dikka was the daughter of Realf and Lettie Brandt, born in Brandt, South Dakota on May 16, 1885. She was turored at home by her mother, paternal grandfather, and her aunt. From 1902 to 1903, Dikka taught second grade at the McFarland public school. She graduated from H.A. Preus Lutheran Academy in Albion, Wisconsin in 1905 as valedictorian. At the University School of Music in Madison, Wisconsin, Dikka studied music for a time, and on September 5, 1907 she was married to J.C.K. Preus. Olaf Johan Brandt (1887-1908) Olaf’s brief life began in Brandt, South Dakota. On February 16, 1908, he was in his junior year at Luther College when he died of pneumonia. Emma Louise Brandt Naeseth (1890-?) Born on January 23, 1890, Emma also was born in Brandt, South Dakota like her siblings. In high school in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, she won a gold medal in an essay and declamatory contest. Later Emma attended the Lutheran Ladies Seminary in Red Wing, Minnesota. She married C.G. Naeseth on July 11, 1912. Walther Immanuel Brandt (1893-?) Walther graduated as a member of the Luther College class of 1915, after which he went on to teach at Albion Academy until 1916. From 1917 to 1918, he taught at the Sioux Falls Lutheran Normal School in South Dakota. Walther was one of the students who toured with the Luther College band to Europe in 1914. At the University of Iowa, he was assistant professor of history, and also taught for a time at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. On July 20, 1921, Walther married Elise Olive Torgerson. 1.3.2.? Bobby Brandt (ca. 1931-?) SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The collection is arranged into 12 series: Series I, Correspondence; Series II, Diaries/Almanacs; Series III, Account Books/Financial Papers; Series IV, Pastoral Records; Series V, Luther College Materials; Series VI, Composition Books; Series VII, Lists; Series VIII, Programs; Series IX, Newspaper Clippings; Series X, Genealogical Records; Series XI, Photographs; and Series XII, Realia. The first series, Correspondence, comprises the great majority of the collection. The series is arranged with Nils O. Brandt’s correspondence first, spanning 1850 to 1918 with some undated material. Nils O. Brandt’s correspondence is arranged alphabetically by sender with the exception of Box 1. Correspondence belonging to Realf O. Brandt follows, much of which was arranged in letter files, and covers the dates 1883 to 1922 as well as some without dates. Realf O. Brandt’s letter files comprise a very large portion of the series, and occasionally also include some of his wife’s (Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt) correspondence. In his letter files, family members are generally alphabetized under the letter “B,” except in some early letter files materials are filed according to first name. For example, correspondence from Realf’s wife Lettie (Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt) may be found under the letter “L.” These letter files are organized chronologically, followed by Realf O. Brandt’s other correspondence, which is alphabetized by sender. Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt’s correspondence follows in the form of letter files, dating from 1908 to 1939. Next is Olaf Johan Brandt’s correspondence from 1896 to 1908 and some undated material, followed by a small amount of Diderikke Ottesen Brandt’s correspondence. Hers is from her husband Nils and her sister Thrine Ottesen, and spans 1880 to 1885 along with some undated material. Olaf Elias Brandt’s correspondence from 1912 is the final part of the series, and is quite small. Throughout the series, female members of the Brandt family are always alphabetized according to their married names. Series II contains Diaries and Almanacs belonging to Nils O. Brandt and Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt, with some that are unidentifiable. Those belonging to Nils O. Brandt date from 1856 to 1913, including some without dates. Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt’s diaries and almanacs span 50 years from 1888 to 1938. Those diaries and almanacs which cannot be identified date from 1851 to 1917. The third series in the collection, Account Books and Financial Papers, begins with account books belonging to Nils O. Brandt dating from 1888 to 1906, some undated. Realf O. Brandt’s account books span 1886 to 1923, including some books with no dates. His financial papers date from 1913 and others are undated. These include stenographer’s and reporter’s notebooks. Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt’s account books are from the years 1892 to 1903, along with undated books. One account book belonging to Olaf Johan Brandt is also included in the series, dating from 1905. Pastoral Records make up series IV. The records are from Madison Lutheran Church located near Decorah, and date from 1872 to 1913 with much undated material. This was one of Nils O. Brandt’s congregations, and the records in this series are his. Series V includes Luther College Materials, from 1860 to 1866. Subscription and pledge materials and a parochial report from 1860 comprise the series. The Composition Books in series VI are not dated, but appear to have been used by Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt to teach her son Olaf Johan Brandt. The subjects include history and literature. The seventh series, Lists, belong to Nils O. Brandt and Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt. Those belonging to Nils O. Brandt date from 1903 to 1917, with some undated material. Thalette Mathilde Galby Brandt’s lists are from 1916. In series VIII, Programs can be found. These date from 1889 to 1915, and include some without dates. Many of the programs are from concerts, as well as other events, banquets, and celebrations. Series IX includes Newspaper Clippings. These belong to Nils O. Brandt and date from 1903, 1914, and some have no dates. The Genealogical Records in series X include a draft of a biography of Nils O. Brandt written by his son Realf O. Brandt, handwritten information about Diderikke Margrethe Brandt Preus and her children, and a genealogical record sheet belonging to Emma Louise Brandt Naeseth dated 1928. The rest of the material in this series have no dates. Photographs can be found in series XI. None of these are dated. Photographs include individuals, groups, places, and stereoscopics. A sizable portion of these are not identified. In addition, there is a partial box of cartes de viste belonging to the Brandt family. Most of these picture friends of the Brandts and are unidentified. Series XII contains Realia. ASSOCIATED COLLECTIONS
The researcher is encouraged to refer also to the papers of Walther Immanuel Brandt in Record Group 15. In this collection are drafts of his publication Luther’s Works, about the life and work of Martin Luther. Also in this collection are a diary Walther kept while compiling the work, as well as a box of his diplomas. Other pertinent collections in Record Group 15 include the J.C.K. Preus papers, Naeseth family papers, and Sigurd Reque’s papers. In Record Group 13, records of Nils O. Brandt’s congregations; the Madison and Lincoln Lutheran Church, and First Lutheran Church in Decorah; can be found. For a more complete genealogical account of the Brandt family, the researcher should consult Genealogies of the Lomen, Brandt, Joys Families, compiled by G.J. Lomen. From this book the Brandts’ relations with such families as Anderson, Egge, Evenson, Gronvold, Haugen, Hjelle, Kittlesby, Lomen, Mohn, Quissel, Ringstad, Siewers, and Ytterboe, names which frequently occur in the correspondence files, can be determined. The complete biography of Nils O. Brandt can be found in The Memoirs of the Reverend Nils Olsen Brandt, translated and annotated by the Reverend Olaf Ottesen Brandt. Both of these books can be found in the main stack in Preus Library. PROVENANCE AND DONOR
The majority of this collection was donated to the Luther College Archives by Gerhard Naeseth and Erling Naeseth. Additional materials have been donated by other members of the Brandt family.
